As a certified Pilates Instructor of five years, I know what it’s like to teach my clients using equipment that may or may not be safe or distraction-free. During my trips to Pilates studios all over the world, I hear stories of the “chorus of Push-Through bars” and the “quirky Reformer” and the “alien space ship springs” and the “sandpaper wheels.” Everyone has a story about at least one piece of equipment in their studio that has a distracting feature about it. You might try to explain away the annoying sound or feeling as a part of that machine’s “personality” but the reality is that distraction is taking away from what you’re trying to do: teach movement. You want your clients and your instructors to be able to focus on feeling, hearing, and seeing the movement. You want your clients to come in and think about how they are going to move their bodies and take care of themselves, rather than how they will be entertained by the equipment today. I get it. I want those things for my clients, too. Even worse are those times when you are teaching on equipment that you aren’t sure is safe. Those are scary times. Either, you block it out of your mind and hope for the best, or actually try and get a hold of tech support to help advise you. Regardless, you know accidents happen. Equipment breaks. Springs snap. Clients and instructors can get hurt. Those things are not fun, even if no one pursues legal action. You became a Pilates instructor to help people, and losing your client’s trust over poorly maintained equipment is silly. But, up until now, there have been no resources to help you. I know this. So many of my maintenance clients tell me, “It’s about time someone did this!” Or, “I’m so glad I can rely on you!” My goal is to demystify equipment maintenance so studios all over the world can have safe and distraction-free Pilates equipment.

Who is this course for?
I designed this course for Studio Owners who want to DIY their maintenance habits, whether because there are no local technicians or because they are handy and want to save a few dollars. Studio owners can also purchase this course for their office managers or equipment managers. While small, home studios can definitely benefit from the materials, you will get the most bang-for-your-buck as a studio with multiple Reformers.
Note: This is NOT a course to teach you how to run your own maintenance business. Stay tuned for that one!
Will I learn how to run my own maintenance business?

I have been running my studio for over ten years and have never had a major issue. Why do I need to change what I’ve been doing?
First of all, that's awesome! Good job! I've visited several studios that have been operating with no maintenance schedule for years and while some of them look great, some of them look terrible. This course is designed to give you the confidence that you are doing the right thing, make it easy to start or change your routine to be more thorough and accurate, and give you the tools and skills you need to extend the life of your equipment. If you have a thorough, weekly and monthly maintenance schedule and log that catches safety hazards and addresses issues in a safe and timely manner, then maybe this course isn't for you.
I just bought my equipment recently, so I don’t need to worry about this for a few years, right?
While most major Pilates equipment brands seem to last for years without any regular maintenance, their condition will drop off quite rapidly at a certain point. If you think of your equipment like a car, requiring regular servicing and checks, it might make more sense. New cars still need to be washed, get inspections, have tires rotated and oil changed. Of couse they can work just fine - for a time - without those things, but it does damage, AND makes the work that will inevitably come along more expensive and perhaps come as a surprise for you.
This program is all about doing the preventative care so you can maintain the "new car smell" of your equipment, and budget for replacements and upgrades so they don't sneak up on you. Starting right when you purchase your equipment is the best possible time to start a maintenance routine.
How much time does implementing this program require? I just don’t have extra time to spare.
The course can take between 4 and 6 hours to complete. Add in up to 6 hours of group Q&A on facebook, and some time for you to practice and implement your new skills. Your first inspection and tune-up might take a bit longer than you think, but I can generally do a monthly maintenance check and tune-up in about 5 minutes per Reformer.
Making time for maintaining your equipment is ultimately saving you stressful time in the future. At some point there will be an issue with your Reformer and you could experience the following: Potentially injuring a client or instructor; Losing coverage of your liability insurance for not having a record of your maintenance plan; Not knowing how to communicate the problem with tech support; Paying the price of lost-income due to a broken piece of equipment; Spending money you didn't plan on to fix the issue.
It's like we tell our Pilates students. Maybe they don't have a major body issue now, but doing Pilates regularly is like maintenance and prevention for their body. It will help them live longer, healthier and more fruitful lives. Same with maintenance for your Reformer.
Can’t I just call my manufacturer when I have a problem?
Yes, of course. Some manufacturers really excel with customer service and tech support. Other companies are very difficult to get any help from once they have your money. But tech support can only do so much over the phone, and at the end of the day, has their own interests at heart. Ultimately, it is your responsibility to ensure your Reformers are safe and don't detract from the movement experience, but add to it. This course teaches you how to work with tech support, when needed, in the least stressful way. And it can help you avoid tech support in the long run.
I have a Peak/Gratz/Basil/Stott Reformer, does this course still apply to me?
Great question! The basics of learning your reformer, maintaining the parts, implementing a routine, recording your process and interacting with tech support are the same no matter what brand of equipment you have. While there are detailed checklists designed for specific Balanced Body models, a generic checklist is available for those of you with a different brand of Reformer.
Can I get PMA CEC's for this?
At the moment, no. But I'm working on my application right now. Stay tuned!
